BMW confirms end of roadster production with Final Edition Z4 ahead of March 2026 closure
BMW has announced the final chapter for its long-running Z4 roadster series with the launch of the Z4 Final Edition. This special variant marks the end of the G29-generation Z4, which has been in production since 2018, and signals a pause in BMW roadster production with no direct successor planned.
The Z4 Final Edition will be available to order from late January 2026, ahead of production ending in March 2026. BMW confirmed that while the Z4 roadster line concludes, the brand’s 4 Series and 8 Series convertibles will continue to be offered.
The Final Edition features a range of exclusive design elements. On the exterior, buyers will find a Frozen Matt Black paint finish paired with M High-Gloss Shadowline trim. Red M Sport brake callipers are included as standard across all variants. Inside, the cabin has been given a distinctive treatment with red stitching on the dashboard, centre console, door cards and sport seats. The steering wheel and bespoke sill plates also feature matching red accents.
BMW offers the Final Edition across all three Z4 models: the 197bhp sDrive20i, the 258bhp sDrive30i and the 340bhp M40i. However, the 30i variant is no longer offered in the UK market. Pricing for the Final Edition has not yet been confirmed, though the current Z4 range tops out at £59,365.
The Final Edition represents the culmination of over three decades of BMW roadster production. The company’s roadster legacy began in 1995 with the Z3, which became known for its lightweight design and driving dynamics. The first-generation Z4, introduced in 2002 as the E85, brought contemporary styling and included the 336bhp Z4 M Roadster, which set a benchmark for performance enthusiasts.

In 2009, the second-generation Z4 (E89) adopted a folding hardtop roof, marking a significant design shift. The third-generation G29 returned to a fabric roof, offering a lighter and more purist driving experience. The G29 was also developed alongside the Toyota GR Supra, sharing engineering and performance characteristics.
The Z4 Final Edition, particularly the M40i variant, delivers 340bhp and maintains the rear-wheel-drive layout that has been central to the Z4’s driving appeal. The car also offers BMW’s modern technologies and driver assistance features, combining performance with comfort and style.
BMW’s decision to end roadster production reflects broader industry trends, including shifts toward electric vehicles and SUV models, while preserving the brand’s convertible options through the 4 Series and 8 Series. The Final Edition ensures that enthusiasts have one last opportunity to experience the pure roadster dynamics that the Z4 has been known for.
Production will conclude at the end of March 2026, after which no new Z4 models will be manufactured. BMW emphasises that the roadster spirit will continue through existing models in the lineup, but for buyers seeking a Z4, the Final Edition represents the last chance to own the G29-generation vehicle.
The launch has already drawn interest from collectors and enthusiasts keen to secure one of the last Z4S. BMW’s legacy of lightweight, engaging roadsters will be celebrated through this run-out model, which combines distinctive styling with refined performance.
The Z4 Final Edition offers a fitting farewell to a series that has combined driving enjoyment with iconic BMW design for more than thirty years.
