Ex-Aviva CEO David Barral dies after his Aston Martin DBX veers off the road in West Yorkshire
Former Aviva chief executive David Barral has died after his Aston Martin DBX crashed off the road and smashed into a tree near his home in West Yorkshire. He was 63.
The fatal crash happened on Tuesday afternoon as Mr Barral was driving along the A58 between Bardsey and Collingham, close to Wetherby, at around 2 pm. Emergency services rushed to the scene, but he was pronounced dead shortly after the collision.
Police said his luxury SUV appeared to have veered off the carriageway before colliding with a tree on a stretch of road popular with commuters and local drivers. An investigation into the cause of the accident is now underway.
In a heartbreaking tribute, Mr Barral’s family said they were “absolutely devastated” by his sudden death. “We are all absolutely devastated at the loss of the most wonderful man,” they said in a statement. “Rest in peace, David. We will all miss you so, so much, and you will always fill our hearts. We love you.”
Born in East Kilbride, Scotland, Barral built a reputation as one of the most respected figures in the British insurance and financial sector. He began his career at Commercial Union, a company that later became part of Aviva, before working at Abbey Life and then joining Aviva, where he would spend 15 years — including four as chief executive officer between 2011 and 2015.
His leadership during a period of sweeping change for the company helped to stabilise Aviva following the financial crisis. He later held senior positions at several major firms, including Virgin Wines, LSL Property Services, and Liverpool Victoria (LV=). At the time of his death, he was serving as a strategic adviser at Harwood Capital, a London-based financial institution.
A spokesperson for Aviva paid tribute to his “immeasurable contributions” to the business world. “We are devastated by the loss of David,” they said. His contributions to the company and the broader business world were immeasurable. Our thoughts are with his family during this incredibly difficult time.”
Mr Barral was a devoted father of three, known among friends and colleagues for his warmth, humour, and down-to-earth approach to leadership. He often spoke about how much his family meant to him, once sharing that his personal ambitions were “to be the best that I can and see my children healthy, happy, and debt-free.”
He also had a love of adventure. In a past interview, he revealed that two of his life goals were “to catch a marlin and ride a Harley.”
Those who knew him have described him as a “true gentleman” who combined professional excellence with a generous spirit. Colleagues from across the industry have shared condolences online, reflecting on his long career and impact on the financial services sector.
Mr Barral lived with his family in Harrogate, in a detached four-bedroom home, where neighbours said he was well-liked and always willing to chat. “He was the sort of man who made time for everyone,” one resident told reporters. “We’re just shocked — it’s such a tragedy.”
West Yorkshire Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward, particularly anyone who saw the grey Aston Martin DBX before the crash or who has dashcam or CCTV footage from the area. Officers are working to piece together the events leading up to the collision.
The A58, which links Leeds to Wetherby, has long been considered a challenging road, with several sharp bends and accident blackspots along its rural stretches.
Tributes have continued to pour in for Barral, whose death marks the loss of a major figure in British business. His family are being supported by the police and is expected to release further statements in the coming days.
