The Oscar-winning star’s death in California leaves Woody Allen “upset” and tributes flooding in

Hollywood legend Diane Keaton has died at the age of 79, her family confirmed, sparking an outpouring of tributes and deep sorrow in the entertainment world. A family spokesperson told People that loved ones are asking for privacy in the wake of her passing in California.

The actor’s former partner and long-time creative collaborator, Woody Allen, is reportedly “extremely distraught and surprised and upset” at the news. According to sources, the loss has stirred his reflections on mortality.

Reports indicate that Keaton’s health had declined rapidly, and Allen was unaware of her condition. “He was surprised,” a source said, emphasising that her worsening health came suddenly.

Throughout her storied career, Keaton delivered iconic performances across multiple films, many in collaboration with Allen. Her signature role came in Annie Hall, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress — a film long associated with her real-life history with Allen. In a 1977 New York Times interview, Keaton addressed speculation about Annie Hall drawing on their relationship: “It’s not true, but there are elements of truth in it.”

Their collaborations also included Manhattan, Sleeper, Manhattan Murder Mystery, and Play It Again, Sam.

In response to her death, actress Mia Farrow wrote on Instagram: “She was an absolutely wonderful actress — and a rare and fascinating person. Thoughts with her children and sisters. Rest in peace Diane.” Farrow’s tribute highlights the deep respect held even among those whose relationships with Allen were fraught.

A memorable public moment came in June 2017 when Keaton embraced Allen onstage as she accepted the American Film Institute Life Achievement Award in Los Angeles — a gesture signalling enduring bonds beyond both art and personal history.

Keaton’s death marks the loss of a performer who blended vulnerability, wit and daring in her work. Her legacy spans decades, genres and generations, and the void she leaves in Hollywood’s landscape will be felt deeply
