15-year-old boy shot in Cardiff suburb; Police urge witnesses to help identify gunman.

Police in Cardiff have launched an urgent appeal after a 15-year-old boy was shot in a shocking incident in a residential suburb. The teenager was targeted on Saturday evening in Clos Y Fynnon, located in the normally quiet Pontprennau area of the city.

The shooting occurred at approximately 8pm, sparking a major emergency response. The boy was quickly taken to hospital, where doctors treated him for gunshot wounds. Thankfully, his injuries were not life-threatening, but officers say the situation could have ended far more tragically.

Detectives from South Wales Police are now racing to identify the person responsible and are calling on the public for crucial assistance. In particular, they are seeking dashcam footage from drivers who were in the vicinity at the time of the attack.

Detective Superintendent Mark O’Shea, leading the investigation, reassured the community that specialist teams are working around the clock. “I want to reassure the local community that teams of detectives and specialist staff continue to work at pace to identify who was responsible and are piecing together what happened that evening,” he said.

Officers have issued a direct plea to motorists who were travelling through Pontprennau or neighbouring Pentwyn between 7pm and 7.50pm on the evening of June 7. Specifically, they are interested in any footage captured on Church Road or the A4232 (Pentwyn link road), as even minor details may hold the key to solving the case.

“The victim suffered relatively minor injuries, though it could so easily have been a lot worse,” added O’Shea. “The public can help us identify and arrest who was responsible – anyone driving through the specified areas at that time on Saturday evening could well have vital evidence on their dashcams, so please send it to us so we can look through it.”

The shooting has shocked the Cardiff community, where gun crime remains a rare occurrence. Pontprennau, known for its family-friendly streets and quiet residential estates, has been left reeling by the violent attack.

Police have not yet confirmed whether the shooting was targeted or random, nor have they disclosed any details about potential suspects. The force continues to treat the investigation as a priority.

Local residents have expressed their alarm at the incident. One neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “You don’t expect this kind of thing to happen on your doorstep. We’re all just hoping the boy makes a full recovery and the police catch whoever did this.”

South Wales Police are urging anyone with information, no matter how small, to come forward. Tip-offs and footage can be submitted directly via the South Wales Police website. Alternatively, members of the public can call 101, quoting reference number 2500180055.

The incident adds to a worrying spate of recent serious crimes in the Welsh capital, raising concerns about youth violence and illegal firearms circulating in the area.

As detectives sift through evidence and await potential dashcam footage, Cardiff residents remain on edge, hoping swift action will bring those responsible to justice.
