The 74-year-old Laysan Albatross, Wisdom, surprises scientists with her first egg in four years at the Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge.

In an extraordinary display of longevity and resilience, Wisdom, the world’s oldest known bird, has laid an egg at the remarkable age of 74. The Laysan albatross laid her egg at the Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, a remote haven at the northwestern edge of the Hawaiian Archipelago.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Pacific Region shared the joyful news on Facebook, highlighting that this is Wisdom’s first egg in four years. With an estimated lifetime total of 50 to 60 eggs, she continues to defy expectations and inspire scientists worldwide.

Jonathan Plissner, supervisory wildlife biologist at Midway Atoll, described the event as a “special joy,” expressing optimism about the egg’s chances of hatching. The father, Wisdom’s new mate, has been diligently taking on incubation duties, a critical role in the albatrosses’ lengthy reproductive process.

Wisdom was first banded in 1956 after being observed laying an egg. Since Laysan albatrosses typically begin breeding at five years old, researchers estimate she hatched in 1950 or earlier. Her long life and continued reproductive activity stand out, given that the species’ average lifespan is around 68 years, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Throughout her life, Wisdom has raised at least 30 chicks, contributing significantly to the survival of her species. Her long-time partner, Akeakamai, with whom she raised many of her offspring, has not been seen for several years. Nonetheless, Wisdom’s ability to bond with a new mate and continue her reproductive journey is a testament to her adaptability and the resilience of her species.

Laysan albatrosses face numerous challenges, including habitat loss, climate change, and plastic pollution. Wisdom’s continued success provides hope and a tangible reminder of the importance of conservation efforts.
