Weight loss desperation: I battled obesity with a controversial app that shouted ‘fatty’ at every bite

Channel 4’s innovative series, “Around The World In 80 Weighs,” has set six Brits on a mission to discover and adopt weight-loss strategies from different countries in the quest to combat Britain’s ongoing obesity crisis. As the participants delve into various global fat-fighting rules, they encounter unique practices, challenges, and transformative experiences.

One participant, a 58-year-old mother of two from Kettering, Northants, shares her journey to change not just her weight but her entire lifestyle. Overcoming menopausal struggles and confidence issues, she embarked on a global adventure with newfound friends. From Japan, she adopted the practice of eating slowly, enhancing digestion, and recognizing fullness. In Tonga and India, she learned the art of choosing the right ingredients, and in America, the significance of incorporating exercise into her routine became evident.

Another participant, a 33-year-old community officer from South London, reflects on her emotional connection with food that began in childhood. Facing obesity and the risk of diabetes at nearly 20st, she realised it was time to address not just her weight but the emotional ties to food. Participating in the show provided her with a transformative opportunity to emotionally open up and break free from dependence on comforting foods. Exploring cultures and embracing healthier food choices, she successfully shed 3st, gaining not only a healthier lifestyle but also a newfound perspective on self-love and acceptance.

As the series unfolds, it sheds light on the diverse fat-fighting techniques around the world, challenging participants to confront their relationships with food and adopt healthier habits. The global journey proves that weight loss goes beyond physical changes, encompassing emotional well-being and a renewed sense of self.
