A bull elephant’s charge during a game drive in Kafue National Park results in one death and multiple injuries
In a harrowing incident last week, a US tourist lost her life during a safari in Zambia’s Kafue National Park. Gail Mattson, a 79-year-old, fell victim to a bull elephant attack while part of a six-person safari group. The safari, organized by Wilderness Safari company, took an unexpected turn when their vehicle was charged by the elephant.
The CEO of Wilderness detailed the events, stating the attack occurred around 09:30 am on Saturday. Despite the guides’ extensive training and experience, the vehicle could not escape in time due to blocked terrain, leading to the tragic incident. A video captured by one of the passengers shows the elephant, a five-ton bull, aggressively pursuing the vehicle. The chase ended when the elephant flipped the truck over after the vehicle halted due to an obstruction.
The attack resulted in one fatality, Gail Mattson, and left another group member severely wounded. The remaining four tourists sustained minor injuries. The US Embassy in Lusaka confirmed the death of the US citizen and extended its condolences to the family, offering its support and assistance during this difficult time.
Wilderness Safari has expressed its sorrow over the tragic event and is coordinating efforts for the repatriation of Ms. Mattson to the United States. The incident has sparked discussions about the risks associated with adventure travel and the rare, but potential dangers of wildlife encounters. The Zambian Department of State and the US Embassy have urged travelers to seek information on staying safe while travelling overseas, especially when engaging in adventure travel.
The attack is a somber reminder of the unpredictability of wildlife and the inherent risks of safari excursions in areas populated by wild animals. Kafue National Park, known for its rich biodiversity, becomes the site of a tragic loss, prompting calls for increased safety measures and awareness among tourists embarking on such adventures.
