Demonstrators in key American cities blockade roads and bridges in a call for a ceasefire in the ongoing Gaza conflict

Pro-Palestinian protests have erupted across several major U.S. cities, creating significant disruptions as demonstrators block important transportation routes in a collective call for peace in Gaza. This wave of protests has particularly targeted locations that symbolize economic and logistical hubs, including major highways and bridges leading to key airports and city centres.

In Illinois, a notable demonstration took place on Interstate 190, the main artery leading into Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, one of the largest airports in the United States. Protest organizer Rifqa Falaneh described the blockade as part of a global effort to prompt an economic blockade to support Palestinian freedom. The Chicago Police reported multiple arrests following significant traffic disruptions caused by protesters linking arms across the highway.

California saw similar disruptions with protesters in Oakland blocking the northbound lanes of Interstate 880 by chaining themselves to barrels. Additionally, activists on the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco halted traffic in both directions, unfurling banners demanding global attention to Gaza’s plight.

The protests extended to the Pacific Northwest and the East Coast as well. In Eugene, Oregon, demonstrators briefly shut down Interstate 5, and in New York, activists obstructed the Manhattan-bound side of the Brooklyn Bridge. The Seattle area also witnessed protests, with the main road to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport closed temporarily.

The protests are a response to the recent escalation of violence in Gaza following an attack by Hamas on October 7, which led to a severe Israeli military response. According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, the ongoing conflict has resulted in over 33,700 Palestinian casualties. The protesters aim to draw international attention to the crisis and push for a permanent ceasefire.

Authorities in various cities have responded with a heightened police presence and multiple arrests. In California, around 20 protesters were arrested at the Golden Gate Bridge, and in Oregon, 52 individuals were detained for disorderly conduct after the Interstate 5 blockade. New York police reported a quick escalation in protester numbers during the march, leading to numerous arrests.

As the demonstrations continue, travellers are advised to seek alternative routes and expect delays, especially in the vicinity of major transport hubs. Protest organizers, while acknowledging the inconvenience caused to commuters, emphasize the gravity of the international issues they are highlighting. They argue that the temporary disruptions are a necessary measure to convey the urgency of their call for peace and justice in Gaza.
