Trump’s health report: President declared fit for office amid cholesterol concerns

President Trump’s physician confirms he remains “in excellent health” despite past concerns over high cholesterol and sun exposure

On Sunday, the White House released the results of President Trump’s annual physical examination, marking the first public accounting of his health since his return to office in January 2025. The 78-year-old president, the oldest person ever to hold the office, was declared fit to continue his duties, despite ongoing health concerns such as high cholesterol, which is described as “well controlled.”

The physical exam report, written by Dr. Sean P. Barbabella, a Navy captain and the president’s physician, affirms that Mr. Trump remains “in excellent health,” with no cognitive impairments or mental abnormalities. In a statement, the report noted that the president’s cognitive abilities were assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, on which he scored a perfect 30 out of 30 — a score that indicates no cognitive decline.

The report also highlighted Mr Trump’s physical health, referencing his “active lifestyle” and frequent victories in golf as signs of his physical well-being. However, it did note several health issues, including high cholesterol, which has been under treatment, seasonal allergies, and diverticulosis — a condition where small pouches form in the wall of the colon. He has also undergone cataract surgery for both eyes and had a benign colon polyp removed.

Regarding his cognitive health, Dr. Barbabella reassured the public that Mr. Trump’s brain function was intact, as evidenced by his clean cognitive test results. Additionally, the president’s cardiology tests showed that his cholesterol levels were well-managed, with his LDL cholesterol at 51 — a significant improvement from his 2018 report, which had listed it at 143.

Trump’s dietary habits, including a fondness for fast food, ice cream, and soda, have often been a subject of public debate. However, the president, who does not drink alcohol or smoke, was noted to be a “germaphobe,” and his lifestyle reportedly includes getting around five hours of sleep a night.

While Trump’s health report marks a positive update, his previous medical disclosures have raised scepticism. In 2018, a doctor wrote that Mr Trump had dictated a note describing his health as “astonishingly excellent.” Critics, including independent cardiologists, questioned whether this was an accurate portrayal of his health, citing concerns over his cholesterol levels and potential heart attack risk.

Trump’s current weight is listed at 224 pounds, which is nine pounds heavier than his 2023 record. His weight and diet remain subjects of concern, given his age and lifestyle.

Presidents are not legally required to release their medical records, but it is a tradition that serves to reassure the public about the health of their elected leaders. This latest report aims to address such concerns and reassure Americans that the president is physically and mentally capable of handling the demands of office.
