Former financier’s dramatic demise unfolds as arson verdict pronounced – cyanide ingestion confirmed as suicide
In a courtroom drama that took a dark turn, Michael Marin, a former Wall Street trader, met a tragic end by swallowing poison seconds after being sentenced to 21 years in prison for insurance fraud. Chilling footage captured the haunting moment as Marin, once a figure of financial prowess, collapsed and ultimately succumbed to the fatal act.
The guilty verdict stemmed from Marin’s involvement in a 2011 fire at a property he owned, a blaze that raised suspicions of arson for insurance purposes. Marin, aged 53 at the time, managed to escape the fire but faced accusations of intentionally starting it to make an insurance claim on the house, a property purchased for $3.5 million.

The investigation revealed Marin’s death as a deliberate suicide, supported by the discovery of a gas canister of sodium cyanide in his car. Detectives speculated that Marin had fashioned capsules of the toxic substance before appearing in court. The spokesperson confirmed Marin’s recent online purchase of the chemical, further reinforcing the belief in a premeditated act.
Adding to the somber revelation, Marin’s son received a delayed email from his late father, indicating that if things went awry in court, the trader’s wills were in place, and his car could be found at a specific Mesa location.
Marin’s life, once adorned with luxury and adventure, unravelled in financial turmoil after a significant house purchase in 2008. Despite outward appearances of wealth, including Picasso sketches, a Rolls Royce, private plane ownership, and conquering eight of the world’s highest summits, Marin found himself mired in debt. The ill-fated arson attempt was perceived as a desperate measure to alleviate his financial nightmare.
The courtroom tragedy unfolded as a stark reminder of the complexities that can haunt even those who, on the surface, seem to lead lives of glamour and success.
