Tottenham target Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Ko Itakura after sealing Kota Takai signing
Tottenham Hotspur could soon welcome a second Japanese centre-back to North London, with Bundesliga defender Ko Itakura reportedly offered to the club amid growing speculation over Cristian Romero’s future.
Just days after finalising a £5 million deal for 19-year-old Japan international Kota Takai, Spurs have been informed that Borussia Mönchengladbach are willing to sell 28-year-old Itakura for a cut-price £12 million this summer. The experienced defender, who has long been on Tottenham’s radar, has just one year left on his current deal, prompting the German club to cash in.
According to GiveMeSport, Tottenham have held “regular contact” with Itakura’s representatives over the past 18 months. Sources close to the player claim intermediaries have now formally alerted Spurs that Gladbach are ready to negotiate a deal. While Thomas Frank’s side are reportedly still deliberating over whether to pursue the move, the profile fits Frank’s preference for defenders comfortable in a back three.
The potential deal comes at a crucial time. Spurs face uncertainty at the heart of defence with Romero’s future unresolved, and the club looking to bolster options ahead of the new Premier League season. Takai’s arrival signals a clear intent to rejuvenate the back line, but the possibility of adding Itakura—who has Bundesliga and international experience—would add leadership and versatility.
Itakura, a regular in Japan’s national side and a former Manchester City player, made 25 appearances for Gladbach last season. Known for his intelligent positioning and calmness under pressure, he offers a different dynamic compared to Tottenham’s younger targets.
However, Spurs have not limited their search to Japanese talent. The club continue to be linked with high-profile defenders including Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace, though recent reports suggest they are now outsiders in that race. Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite remains a top target, with a price tag nearing £70 million. Brentford’s Nathan Collins is also said to be of interest, especially with manager Thomas Frank’s history with the Irishman.
Despite their shopping list, Itakura’s availability at a fraction of those prices could tempt Spurs to strike a quick deal. His modest £12 million valuation, leadership experience, and tactical flexibility make him a viable option—especially if Romero departs or Takai is initially viewed as one for the future.
Whether both Japanese defenders will arrive this summer remains uncertain, but the double pursuit points to a broader strategic shift. Spurs appear intent on bringing in composed ball-playing defenders capable of slotting into Frank’s favoured system.
Supporters have reacted positively to the Takai deal, and news of interest in Itakura has only added to the excitement. However, with rival clubs also strengthening rapidly, the onus is on Tottenham to move swiftly if they want to avoid losing out.
As the transfer window gathers pace, all eyes will be on Hotspur Way to see whether Ko Itakura becomes the latest addition to a new-look Spurs defence.
