Woods says he’s “not ready” to return to competitive golf as he continues to grieve the loss of his mother, Kultida Woods.
Tiger Woods has announced his withdrawal from this week’s Genesis Invitational, citing the recent passing of his mother, Kultida Woods. The 15-time major champion, who originally planned to compete at Torrey Pines, shared the emotional decision on social media.
“I planned to tee it up this week, but I’m just not ready,” Woods wrote on X. “I did my best to prepare, knowing it’s what my Mom would have wanted, but I’m still processing her loss.”
His absence is deeply felt, as the Genesis Invitational benefits his TGR Foundation, and the event had confirmed his participation just days earlier. This tournament would have marked his first official PGA Tour start since missing the cut at The Open in July.
Woods, 49, has been battling injuries in recent years, undergoing microdecompression surgery on his lower back in September—his sixth procedure in a decade. His return to competitive golf has been limited, playing only four full rounds in an official event last season, with his best finish being 60th at The Masters.
The legendary golfer has an illustrious history at Torrey Pines, winning there eight times, including his iconic 2008 U.S. Open victory. However, with the event relocated from Riviera Country Club due to wildfires in Los Angeles, Woods’ anticipated return will now be delayed.
Woods expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from fans and hopes to make an appearance later in the week. His absence adds an emotional layer to the Genesis Invitational, as the sport rallies around him during this difficult time.
