Thomas Detry storms to his maiden PGA Tour win at the Phoenix Open with a commanding seven-shot victory.
Belgium’s Thomas Detry delivered a golfing masterclass at the Phoenix Open, clinching his first-ever PGA Tour title with a dominant seven-shot victory. The 32-year-old fired rounds of 66, 64, 65, and 65 to finish an astonishing 24 under par, leaving his closest challengers, Daniel Berger and Michael Kim, trailing at 17 under.
Detry’s final round was a display of composure and brilliance, capped off by four consecutive birdies to seal the win. As he walked up the 18th fairway, knowing the title was his, he was met with rapturous applause before celebrating with his wife and two children. “It’s incredible, it’s what dreams are made of,” Detry told Sky Sports.
His path to victory wasn’t without pressure. Berger, playing alongside him, momentarily closed the gap to two strokes after sinking his fifth birdie of the day on the 15th. But Detry responded in spectacular fashion, delivering a pinpoint approach on the iconic 16th stadium hole to set up a tap-in birdie that effectively ended the contest.
Jordan Spieth and South African Christiaan Bezuidenhout shared fourth place at 16 under, while Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre finished tied for sixth with Will Chandler and world number 11 Justin Thomas at 15 under.
For Detry, this triumph was long overdue. Having finished runner-up twice in his previous 65 PGA Tour starts, he had often come close but never crossed the line. “I’ve given myself plenty of chances in the past but never been able to conclude. I’m just so happy,” he said.
This victory also marks Detry’s first professional win since lifting the 2018 World Cup of Golf alongside compatriot Thomas Pieters. Now, with his breakthrough on golf’s biggest stage, Belgium has its first PGA Tour champion—an achievement that will be remembered for years to come.
