During a recent episode of “This Morning,” the show’s agony aunt, Deidre Sanders, found herself facing criticism from some viewers who felt her advice was lacking in empathy and support.

On Wednesday’s show (January 31), Deidre returned to provide guidance to callers seeking help with their personal issues. One caller, identified as ‘Susan,’ was too distressed to discuss her father’s recent cancer diagnosis, so presenter Rylan Clark read out her plea for assistance on her behalf.

In response, Deidre stated, “I can completely understand how freaked out you feel, Susan. I mean, cancer is such a scary word.” She went on to address the changing attitude towards discussing cancer, noting, “People do talk about it a bit more matter-of-factly now. People used to almost not dare say the word. That builds up the fear, and you’ve probably got that frightened child inside you still.”

Deidre continued by advising Susan not to feel obligated to be strong for others and recommended seeking information and support about prostate cancer from specialised websites.

Another caller, ‘Jane,’ shared her struggles with losing her job at the age of 58, which had eroded her confidence. She expressed her fear about what lay ahead at her age. Deidre offered breathing techniques and empathised, saying, “I absolutely understand how scary it is.”

However, once again, Deidre directed the caller towards a website for further assistance, mentioning the government’s initiatives to support over-50s in finding employment.

The responses from viewers on social media platforms, including X (formerly Twitter), were swift. Some expressed disappointment in Deidre’s approach, with one remarking, “And to think that Deidre got an MBE for telling people to go to a certain website rather than actually giving out sound advice.” Another echoed this sentiment, calling it “utter madness.”

Others questioned the purpose of seeking advice from Deidre when her response often consisted of directing callers to websites. The criticism highlights the importance of providing heartfelt and meaningful guidance to individuals seeking help during challenging times.
