Penrith Panthers star removes social media presence following public outcry over irresponsible video

Penrith Panthers player Taylan May has taken down his Instagram account after a video posted on his social media sparked widespread controversy. Last week, May shared footage of himself in a vehicle speeding through a suburban area at 96 kilometres per hour. The video shows May in the passenger seat, not in control of the vehicle, which might spare him from direct repercussions by the NRL Integrity Unit.

Despite not driving, the video’s implications alarmed many within the Panthers organization and angered road safety advocates, including the Pedestrian Council of Australia. This incident has raised serious concerns about the responsibilities athletes hold as public figures, particularly in demonstrating safe behaviours.

The repercussions of his actions are already becoming visible, as speculation mounts that May will be excluded from the upcoming game against the Wests Tigers in Bathurst. Penrith coach Ivan Cleary is scheduled to address the media tomorrow, potentially to discuss May’s standing with the team.

This is not the first instance of May drawing attention through social media, but it is undoubtedly the most serious. His online presence typically features lively interactions, including live streams and recently, a new YouTube channel. His channel’s debut video, a light-hearted vlog of daily activities, contrasts sharply with the gravity of his latest controversy.

As Taylan May steps back from Instagram, the Panthers and their supporters are left to ponder the implications of social media missteps. The team must navigate the balance between personal expression and public perception, especially as they prepare for their next match without one of their prominent players.
