The age-old question of whether to tip when ordering takeout has once again ignited a fiery debate online, as a woman named Abigail, known as @thenappinghouse_ on TikTok, sought advice from her followers on the contentious issue.

In a viral video, Abigail shared her takeout routine, highlighting the perplexing moment when faced with a tip line on the receipt after picking up her order. She candidly asked her audience, “Do you tip? Is it wrong not to tip? Am I going over the top and paying more for my meals by tipping?”

The TikToker admitted her dilemma, confessing, “Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t ’cause I don’t know what’s right.” She implored her followers to share their perspectives on whether tipping is warranted for takeout.

The comments section quickly became a battleground of opinions, with a myriad of viewpoints on whether tipping is expected for takeout services.

Among the responses, a resounding majority expressed reluctance to tip for takeout, with reasons ranging from not receiving traditional waiter service to frustration over the pervasive tipping culture.

“No tip for take out,” declared one user, encapsulating a sentiment shared by many. Others articulated a stance of tipping exclusively for sit-down service or delivery.

However, individuals working in service roles, especially those who rely on tips, passionately defended the practice. A user employed as a cashier emphasized the impact on income, stating, “I work at a restaurant. I work cashier. I rely on tips to make money. All the servers make double than me. It’s not fair when people don’t tip carryout.”

The debate reached a level of complexity, with varying percentages suggested for those who choose to tip during takeout transactions.

As social media users continue to grapple with this tipping conundrum, the question remains: Where do you stand on the great takeout tipping divide?
