Two injured in police shooting after stolen car incident in Sydney

Officers fire at suspects driving a vehicle stolen from the home of Penrith MP Karen McKeown

A dramatic police incident unfolded in Wentworthville, western Sydney, on Friday afternoon, resulting in two individuals sustaining gunshot wounds. The shooting occurred after the suspects allegedly drove a car, stolen from the home of Penrith MP Karen McKeown, towards police officers.

The incident began when NSW Police received reports about the stolen vehicle. Following the car’s tracking device, officers located it in an underground car park of a unit block on Lane Street. As police approached, the vehicle was allegedly driven directly at them, prompting the officers to discharge their firearms.

One of the injured men is in critical condition, while the other is reported to be stable. Both were transported to Westmead Hospital; one accompanied by a police escort. Fortunately, the responding officers were unharmed.

Police Commissioner Karen Webb stated that a critical incident team, including homicide squad detectives, would investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The scene remains active, with over ten police vehicles present and 200 metres of the road cordoned off.

Witnesses in the area reported hearing gunshots followed by significant commotion, with police arriving quickly on the scene. The incident has raised concerns in the community, reflecting ongoing discussions about policing methods and public safety.

As the investigation unfolds, local authorities will seek to clarify the events leading to the shooting and address community concerns about safety and police conduct.
