Colleagues and fans mourn the loss of the radio legend

BBC Radio 2 presenter Steve Wright has passed away at the age of 69, with police confirming that his death is being treated as “unexpected” but not suspicious. Wright, known for his iconic show ‘Steve Wright In The Afternoon’, died earlier this week, sparking an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and listeners alike.

The Metropolitan Police were called to a flat in central London’s Marylebone area on Monday morning, where Wright was pronounced dead at the scene. A spokesperson stated that the death was not considered suspicious, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

Wright’s career in broadcasting spanned over four decades, during which he became one of the most beloved figures on BBC Radio 1 and then Radio 2. His meticulous approach to his shows and dedication to his craft earned him praise from colleagues and listeners alike.

Colleagues such as Paul Gambaccini and Noel Edmonds have remembered Wright as a true master of his craft, comparing his impact on radio to that of Sir Terry Wogan. Nicky Campbell described him as being in his element on the air, where his passion for radio was palpable.

Wright’s last radio appearance was a pre-recorded special Valentine’s Day edition of his Love Songs program on Radio 2. He had stepped down from his weekday show in September 2022 but continued to host Sunday Love Songs.
