Keir Starmer announces closer defence collaboration with Saudi Arabia, as Amnesty International urges him to challenge the country’s human rights abuses

Keir Starmer has announced a significant step in the UK’s defence partnership with Saudi Arabia, unveiling plans for closer military collaboration, which the government believes will bolster national security and strengthen global alliances. The announcement comes following Starmer’s meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Riyadh, where the two leaders discussed expanding defence cooperation, including in areas such as combat air.

Downing Street has confirmed that this partnership will not only enhance military ties but also pave the way for deeper industrial cooperation. In a statement, No 10 described the new agreement as a “framework for future collaboration,” ensuring the relationship would remain strong for generations. The UK will focus on areas such as combat air and armaments, aiming to fortify the country’s defence capabilities.

Starmer emphasised the economic benefits that this partnership could bring, framing it as a key element in his broader economic agenda. He stated, “What happens in the Middle East matters at home, from cutting the cost of living to building resilient supply chains, and Saudi Arabia is an important partner for us.” His words echoed a commitment to securing trade deals and attracting investment from global powers like Saudi Arabia and the UAE, both vital players in the region.

The strengthening of UK-Saudi ties comes at a time of ongoing controversy surrounding the kingdom’s human rights record. Amnesty International UK, alongside other human rights organisations, has called on Starmer to use his platform to challenge the repression of activists and defenders of human rights in the Gulf state. Despite the criticism, Starmer’s government has defended the defence pact, suggesting that economic interests must sometimes be balanced with the diplomatic realities of global alliances.

In addition to defence cooperation, the UK has committed to providing £11 million in humanitarian aid for Syria and offering support to the Lebanese Armed Forces to help maintain a fragile ceasefire with Israel. The UK has also reappointed Sir Michael Barber as envoy for Palestinian Authority governance, a move aimed at helping the Palestinian government improve its administrative functions and service delivery.

Starmer’s visit to Saudi Arabia and the UAE is part of his larger strategy to boost the UK economy through international investments. Speaking to the media, Starmer reiterated that economic growth and raising living standards across the UK remain his top priorities. “I’ve made it clear that economic growth is my number one mission, and now is the time to secure contracts and investment from global partners like Saudi Arabia,” he added. His comments suggest that international relations, particularly with the Gulf states, are integral to the Labour Party’s vision for economic recovery and future prosperity.

However, the trip has not been without controversy. Human rights groups have long accused Saudi Arabia of widespread abuses, including the suppression of dissent, executions, and crackdowns on freedom of expression. Despite these concerns, Starmer has opted to focus on the strategic and economic potential of the partnership, leaving his critics questioning whether human rights should be sidelined in the pursuit of national interests.
