SpaceX grounds Falcon 9 after first landing mishap in years

SpaceX faces scrutiny from the FAA after a rare Falcon 9 booster landing failure, disrupting mission schedules.

SpaceX‘s Falcon 9 rocket, celebrated for its consistent success in launching and landing, has been grounded following a rare and dramatic mishap. The incident occurred during the landing of a Falcon 9 first stage, which had completed a record 23 flights. The booster, after successfully delivering 21 Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit, encountered difficulties during its landing on a drone ship in the Atlantic Ocean. It made a hard landing, toppled over, and ultimately exploded. One thing we do know, though, is this was purely a recovery issue and posed no threat to the primary mission or public safety.”

This incident follows closely on the heels of another challenge for SpaceX, where an upper-stage malfunction left a batch of Starlink satellites in a lower-than-planned orbit. Although the FAA allowed SpaceX to continue flight operations during the investigation of that incident, the latest landing failure will likely lead to closer scrutiny.

The clock is ticking for SpaceX as the company navigates a tight launch schedule. The Polaris Dawn mission, which had already faced delays, must launch soon to clear the launch pad for a Falcon Heavy rocket required for NASA’s Europa Clipper mission. The Europa Clipper is scheduled to launch on October 10, and with the limited turnaround time needed to prepare the pad for Falcon Heavy, SpaceX has little room for further delays. An alternative launch pad, Space Launch Complex 40, is also occupied, as it is set to be used for NASA’s Crew-9 mission to the International Space Station, scheduled for no earlier than September 24.
