A devastating accident in Limpopo province results in numerous fatalities as pilgrims travelled to Moria

In a heart-wrenching incident in South Africa’s Limpopo province, a bus crash has resulted in the tragic loss of 45 lives, with one person seriously injured. The Department of Transport confirmed that the accident occurred on Thursday, as a bus transporting Easter pilgrims from Botswana to Moria, Limpopo, met with a catastrophic fate.

According to reports, the bus driver lost control, striking barriers on a bridge near Mamatlakala. The impact caused the bus to plummet off the bridge and crash to the ground below, where it subsequently caught fire. The pilgrims aboard were en route to celebrate Easter in Moria, a significant journey for many in the region.

The crash scene, captured by first responders and shared by the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, depicted a grim site along the R518 in the Waterberg District. The intensity of the fire and the impact left some victims burned beyond recognition, while others were found trapped within the wreckage or scattered around the site.

In the wake of this tragedy, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended his deepest condolences to the nation of Botswana, assuring support in this time of mourning. Among the victims, an 8-year-old child emerged as the sole survivor, now receiving medical care at a nearby hospital, as stated by the Limpopo Department of Transport.

This devastating event has sent shockwaves through South Africa and Botswana, uniting both nations in grief. As investigations continue, the communities affected by this tragedy seek comfort in each other, mourning the loss of lives and the impact on the Easter pilgrimage tradition.
