Suspects charged with attempted murder as Israel investigates Iranian, Hamas links to attack

The Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) has arrested two Jewish-Israeli men accused of aiding the terrorists responsible for Thursday’s bus bombings in Bat Yam, central Israel. The two suspects are alleged to have driven the attackers to their target locations, and they now face charges of attempted murder, Israeli media reported on Friday.

Authorities continue to hunt for additional suspects linked to the coordinated bombings, which targeted three buses in Bat Yam and another in Holon. The explosive devices were planted in parked buses, minimizing casualties but causing widespread alarm.

Iranian and Hamas Connection Suspected

Early intelligence suggests the plot was orchestrated by Iranian operatives and carried out by Hamas-affiliated militants from the West Bank. According to a security source quoted by Walla, Israeli authorities view the incident as “very serious” and have assembled a special operations squad to track down those responsible and prevent further attacks.

Shin Bet has long warned of Iran’s growing influence in the West Bank, alleging Tehran supplies weapons, trains militants, and assists in constructing explosive devices. The latest attack underscores concerns over Iranian-backed networks expanding their operational reach inside Israel.

Security Tightened in Bat Yam

In response to the bombings, Bat Yam Mayor Zvika Brut announced heightened security measures, particularly around schools and public buildings. However, he reassured residents that the immediate threat had likely passed, and security forces remain vigilant.

While authorities have yet to reveal the identities of the two Israeli suspects, their involvement has shocked many, raising questions about possible radicalisation or external coercion.

The investigation remains ongoing, with security forces prioritising efforts to dismantle the broader terrorist cell behind the attack. Officials have urged the public to remain alert and report any suspicious activity as Israel faces a renewed wave of security threats.
