A 4.2 magnitude earthquake rattled California on Tuesday evening, centred in San Bernardino, less than two miles from the city centre. Despite initially being classified as a 4.5-magnitude quake, it was later downgraded. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or fatalities, according to the San Bernardino County Fire Department.

Residents reported feeling the quake more than 100 miles away, including in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Diego counties, as per the US Geological Survey. The tremors led to an outpouring of responses on social media, with X (formerly Twitter) buzzing with hundreds of accounts sharing their experiences.

In Riverside, a resident shared an adorable video capturing two cats being stirred awake by the rattling. The felines are seen cuddling on a bed before a loud noise startles them, followed by a jolt that moves the camera. One cat seeks safety under the bed in response to the unexpected event.

Various individuals across Southern California recounted their experiences, with some expressing surprise at the strength and unusual nature of the earthquake. From Glendale to Hollywood, residents reported feeling the shaking, prompting reactions on social media.

Despite the widespread sensation, the quake did not result in any significant damage or casualties. The USGS reminded the public of safety protocols, urging individuals to drop, cover, and hold on if they experience an earthquake, emphasising the importance of swift action as seconds can make a difference.
