Former Agent Evy Poumpouras recounts supernatural experiences
In an eerie revelation that seems straight out of a ghost story, a former US Secret Service Special Agent, Evy Poumpouras, has come forward with claims that the White House, one of the most iconic buildings in the United States, is haunted by the ghosts of its former residents. Serving during the Clinton, Bush, and Obama administrations, Poumpouras’s account adds a spine-tingling layer to the rich history of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Throughout her years of providing close protection for President Barack Obama and other high-profile officials, Poumpouras encountered more than just the typical challenges of her job. Beyond the threats of terrorism and the demands of national security, she faced the uncanny and unexplained—phantom voices and footsteps that echoed through the halls at night.

Staff members would often mention hearing keys jingling at night, attributing the sound to ghostly presences.
Among the spirits said to roam the corridors of the White House is Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, whose life was tragically cut short by an assassin’s bullet. Sightings of Lincoln’s ghost have been reported by various individuals over the years, including First Lady Grace Coolidge and even Winston Churchill. According to legend, Churchill encountered Lincoln’s spectre just as he was stepping out of a bath, to which he famously quipped, “Good evening, Mr. President. You seem to have me at a disadvantage.”
Poumpouras herself experienced these spectral phenomena first-hand, hearing voices and footsteps with no earthly source. Despite the fear these encounters stirred, she chose not to speak of them to her colleagues, fearing it might jeopardize her position. “I wanted to keep my job,” she explained with a laugh.
The White House, with its centuries of history, naturally carries the weight of the past. Poumpouras described feeling chills while walking past portraits of past presidents, like John F. Kennedy, especially during the quiet of night when the building took on the aura of a vast, silent museum. “There were moments when you’d walk by and you’d just get chills,” she said.
This isn’t the first time ghostly tales have been associated with the White House. Its long history as the residence of presidents and their families, coupled with the significant events that have unfolded within its walls, makes it a prime setting for supernatural stories. Whether these tales stem from the imaginations of those who work there or from something truly beyond our understanding, they add a mysterious dimension to one of the world’s most famous buildings.
