Poll reveals scepticism over Biden’s ‘devout catholic’ identity

Americans question the president’s religious sincerity amid policy controversies

A recent Pew Research poll unveils a significant gap between President Joe Biden‘s self-described devout Catholic faith and public perception. Despite Biden’s regular church attendance and his frequent references to his Catholic faith, only a small fraction of Americans, 13%, see him as “very religious”. In contrast, 44% of respondents view him as “not at all” or “not too religious”, highlighting a disconnect between the president’s personal declarations of faith and the public’s acceptance of these claims.

The poll’s findings come amidst ongoing debates around Biden’s stance on abortion, a topic that has historically polarized opinions within the Catholic community and beyond. Despite the Catholic Church’s firm anti-abortion doctrine, Biden has maintained a pro-choice stance, aligning with his political party’s platform but creating tension with religious teachings.

This tension reached a notable point when Pope Francis described Biden’s support for abortion rights as “incoherent” with his Catholic faith, sparking discussions on the compatibility of political beliefs and religious adherence. However, during a later meeting, Biden mentioned that Pope Francis had encouraged him to continue receiving Communion, indicating a complex interplay between personal faith, public persona, and church doctrine.

The discord between Biden’s faith and policy positions has provided fodder for political opponents, with former President Donald Trump, among others, questioning the sincerity of Biden’s religious convictions in the context of electoral politics. Trump, whose own religious adherence has been perceived skeptically by the American public, according to the same Pew poll, has highlighted the perceived inconsistency in Biden’s professed devoutness and policy choices, particularly aiming to appeal to Catholic voters.

These developments raise broader questions about the role of personal faith in public office, the expectations of religious consistency from political leaders, and the impact of religious identity on electoral politics. As the United States continues to navigate these complex intersections of faith and governance, the discrepancy between Biden’s self-identification as a devout Catholic and public perception thereof underscores the challenges of maintaining religious authenticity within the highly scrutinized arena of political leadership
