Despite regional tensions, muslim countries begin observance of holy month

Saudi Arabia and several other Muslim-majority nations have officially declared the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan. This announcement comes amidst ongoing tensions, particularly the conflict between Israel and Gaza, casting a shadow over the start of the fasting month.

In a statement released by Saudi state television, officials confirmed the sighting of the crescent moon, marking Monday as the first day of Ramadan. This declaration was followed by other Gulf Arab nations, including Iraq, Syria, and Egypt.

Despite hopes for a ceasefire in the region before the start of Ramadan, the conflict in Gaza persists. Palestinian health authorities report more than 31,000 casualties in the besieged territory, with aid agencies warning of a looming famine. Additionally, Israeli restrictions on Muslims praying at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque add to the tensions.

King Salman of Saudi Arabia addressed the conflict in his statement, calling for international intervention to halt the violence and provide humanitarian aid to affected areas. He emphasized the need for peace and solidarity during this holy month.

Ramadan, observed by Muslims worldwide, involves fasting from dawn to sunset, along with acts of charity and reflection. While the conflict in Gaza looms large, Muslims around the world will come together to observe Ramadan and seek peace in the region.
