Police investigate apparent homicide after Rob Reiner and his wife are found dead at their LA home
Hollywood has been left in shock after acclaimed director and actor Rob Reiner was found dead at his Los Angeles home alongside his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, in what police are investigating as an apparent homicide.
Reiner, 78, and Singer Reiner, 68, were discovered inside their Brentwood property on Sunday after emergency services were called following a medical aid request. Authorities later confirmed that detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department’s robbery homicide division were leading the investigation.
Police have not released detailed information about the circumstances of their deaths, but investigators described the case as an apparent homicide. Reports indicate that both victims suffered injuries consistent with a knife attack. Despite the gravity of the scene, officers said they are not currently seeking any suspects or persons of interest.
At a press conference later that evening, LAPD chief detective Alan Hamilton said the investigation was still at an early stage. He stressed that no arrests had been made and that no individuals were being questioned as suspects. Family members are expected to be interviewed as part of standard procedure, but police insisted there was no immediate threat to the public.
A spokesperson for the Reiner family confirmed the deaths in a statement, describing the loss as devastating. The family asked for privacy as they come to terms with the sudden and tragic events.
News of Reiner’s death has reverberated across the film industry and beyond. A towering figure in American cinema, Reiner directed some of the most beloved films of the past four decades. His work ranged effortlessly across genres, from comedy and romance to psychological thriller and courtroom drama.
Born in the Bronx in 1947, Reiner was the son of legendary entertainer Carl Reiner and singer Estelle Rebost. He first found fame as an actor in the 1970s, playing Michael “Meathead” Stivic in the groundbreaking sitcom All in the Family. The role earned him multiple Emmy nominations and wins, and cemented his place in television history.
Reiner’s greatest influence, however, came behind the camera. He made his directorial debut with This Is Spinal Tap in 1984, a mockumentary that went on to become one of the most influential comedies ever made. What followed was an extraordinary run of critically acclaimed and commercially successful films, including Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Misery and A Few Good Men.
Many of these films have endured as cultural touchstones, quoted and revisited by generations of audiences. Reiner later said that Stand By Me held particular personal meaning, as it marked a creative step outside his father’s shadow.
Beyond directing, Reiner co-founded Castle Rock Entertainment, the production company behind landmark projects such as The Shawshank Redemption and Seinfeld. He continued acting throughout his career, often in supporting roles or as himself, appearing in both films and television well into later life.
Reiner was also known for his outspoken political activism. A fierce critic of former US president Donald Trump, he campaigned on issues including marriage equality and public health, and remained a vocal presence in political debate.
Friends and fellow entertainers were seen gathering near the Reiners’ home as news of their deaths emerged. Tributes are expected to pour in from across the industry in the coming days.
Rob Reiner is survived by his children Jake, Nick and Romy, as well as Tracy Reiner, whom he adopted from his first marriage to Penny Marshall. As investigators continue to piece together what happened inside the Brentwood home, Hollywood mourns the loss of a filmmaker whose work shaped modern cinema and whose final chapter has ended in profound tragedy.
