Riyadh art transforms the cityscape with world-class artworks, elevating metro stations into dynamic cultural landmarks

Riyadh Art, one of the world’s largest public art programs, has unveiled four monumental installations with the launch of the Riyadh Metro, redefining the commuter experience by merging transportation with artistic expression. This initiative transforms metro stations into cultural landmarks, showcasing masterpieces from globally renowned artists.

At the King Abdullah Financial District Metro Station, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, Alexander Calder’s towering kinetic sculpture, “Janey Waney,” creates a vibrant, dynamic atmosphere. Adjacent to it, Robert Indiana’s iconic “LOVE (Red Outside Blue Inside)” draws visitors with its bold colours and universal message of hope and connection.

At Qasr Al-Hokm Downtown Metro Station, Snohetta’s architectural design serves as the backdrop for Ugo Rondinone’s radiant “The Sun,” symbolising energy and renewal. Complementing this is Zaman Jassim’s reflective piece, “When the Moon is Full,” inspired by Riyadh’s rich cultural heritage.

“These permanent artworks embody our vision of transforming Riyadh into an open-air gallery,” said Khalid Al-Hazani, executive director of Riyadh Art. “By collaborating with some of the most creative minds, we’re not just adding art to public spaces—we’re creating cultural landmarks that inspire and engage generations.”

Riyadh Art has seamlessly integrated more than 500 artworks into the urban landscape since its 2019 launch, engaging millions of visitors and enhancing the city’s global standing as a hub for contemporary art.

Riyadh Metro stations are becoming more than just transportation hubs; they are evolving into vibrant cultural spaces that celebrate both local and global artistry. The introduction of these monumental art pieces also highlights the city’s broader commitment to integrating culture and innovation, enhancing the everyday journey for millions of commuters.

As part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, Riyadh’s urban transformation is positioning the city as a global destination for contemporary art. The Riyadh Metro art installations are a key step towards creating an environment where creativity meets public infrastructure, contributing to a richer cultural experience for residents and visitors alike.
