Red Bull unveils the groundbreaking RB17 hypercar powered by a V10 engine

At the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed, Red Bull revealed the highly anticipated RB17, a track-only hypercar that promises to outpace even Formula 1 cars. This remarkable vehicle, boasting an impressive 1,184 horsepower V10 engine, marks the culmination of Adrian Newey’s illustrious career at Red Bull.

The RB17, developed over the past three years, was born from Newey’s work on the championship-winning F1 car that propelled Max Verstappen to his first world title. With a limited production run of only 50 units, this hypercar signifies a unique blend of engineering excellence and high-performance racing technology.

Newey began the project in 2021, strategically aligning it with the emergence of new F1 regulations in 2022. Christian Horner, principal of Red Bull Racing, emphasized the lack of regulations and the F1 cost cap as key motivations behind creating this exceptional vehicle, admitting, “That’s why it’s f**king expensive.”

The RB17’s specifications read like a wish list of Newey’s greatest innovations, incorporating active aerodynamics and advanced suspension systems that have become hallmarks of his career. Newey aims for the car to be not only visually stunning but also enjoyable for drivers of all skill levels. He stated that anyone with a reasonable amount of track experience should be able to enjoy driving the RB17.

Originally, the plan involved a four-wheel-drive system with a twin-turbocharged V8 engine. However, the final design features a naturally aspirated V10, developed by Cosworth, paired with a hybrid system that provides additional performance support. The RB17 is expected to weigh just 805kg, making it a lightweight powerhouse on the track.

With a design focused on performance, the RB17 can achieve a top speed exceeding 217mph. Newey has ensured the car meets LMH motorsport safety regulations, despite not being road-legal. Instead of competing in existing racing series, Red Bull plans to offer bespoke track days and experiences for its customers.

The first track testing is set to commence next summer, following the initial firing of the engine later this season. The collaboration with Michelin will yield three specially developed tyre options, including a slick tyre designed to unlock the car’s full potential.

In-house manufacturing will produce the 50 RB17 units over two years, utilizing the same suppliers as Red Bull’s F1 operations. This strategic approach underscores Newey’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of quality and performance throughout the RB17’s development.
