Gandhi clarifies intent of proposed survey, slams Modi’s reaction
In a significant reversal, Rahul Gandhi, the Congress leader, has altered his position on the proposed “wealth survey,” highlighting its purpose as a means to identify injustice rather than an immediate action.
Speaking at the party’s ‘Social Justice Conference’ in Delhi’s Jawahar Bhawan, Gandhi clarified his stance, stating, “I have not said we will take action yet. I am just saying let’s find out how much injustice has been done.”
Gandhi criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s response to his proposal, accusing him of portraying it as an attempt to destabilize the country. “Look at how Prime Minister Narendra Modi reacted the moment I said let’s test how much injustice has been done. Through the X-ray (wealth survey), we will get to know the problem,” Gandhi remarked.

Gandhi also targeted those opposing the proposed caste census, stating, “Those who call themselves ‘deshbakt’ are scared of the ‘X-ray’ of caste census,” indicating that no force can impede such an initiative.
Furthermore, Gandhi reiterated his party’s promise to conduct a caste census once in power, stating, “As soon as our government is formed, the first thing that would be done is caste census.”
The remarks come after Gandhi’s earlier announcement on April 7, where he pledged to conduct a financial and institutional survey to assess wealth distribution across the nation, in addition to the promised nationwide caste census.
Gandhi also criticized recent events such as the Ram Mandir inauguration, alleging, “Not a single Dalit or tribal was seen at the temple or during the inauguration of the new Parliament building. Ninety per cent of the population understands this.”
