Listeners and station management respond to controversy surrounding genre dispute
A radio station in Ada, Oklahoma, has found itself at the centre of a racism controversy after refusing to play Beyoncé’s new single, ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’, citing its status as a country music station.
The incident occurred when a listener requested the song, only to receive a response from the station stating that they do not play Beyoncé on KYKC as it is a country music station. This response sparked accusations of racism and discrimination against Beyoncé.

They emphasized their support for Beyoncé and stated that they have since added the song to their playlist on three stations.
Roger Harris, the general manager of 100.1 KYKC, addressed the controversy, explaining that the station initially refused to play the song as they would with any non-country request. He emphasized their love for Beyoncé and their support for her career.
Harris expressed regret over the misunderstanding and stated that they are now fully supportive of Beyoncé’s new country music direction.
The incident highlights the challenges faced by radio stations in managing their playlists and responding to listener requests, particularly in cases where artists explore new genres.
