Queen Camilla embraces a new approach to royal etiquette, defying a tradition the late Queen Elizabeth upheld for decades.
A major shift in royal protocol is unfolding under Queen Camilla, as she abandons a strict rule that Queen Elizabeth II adhered to throughout her reign. The longstanding tradition of avoiding physical contact with the public is now being openly disregarded, with King Charles III reportedly playing a major role in this transformation.
For decades, royal etiquette dictated that members of the public should not touch the Queen, a practice strictly upheld by the late Queen Elizabeth II. However, Camilla is changing the narrative, with her more open and tactile approach making headlines.
Embed from Getty ImagesBody language expert Darren Stanton, often referred to as the “Human Lie Detector”, recently analysed Camilla’s public interactions during an interview on behalf of Belfair Slots. According to Stanton, Camilla’s body language and behaviour at recent public events show a marked departure from past royal customs.
A prime example was this year’s Cheltenham Festival, where Camilla was seen maintaining strong eye contact and engaging physically while speaking with race-goers.
“Camilla was very tactile. Her interactions seemed really genuine on the day,” Stanton observed.
This contrasts sharply with the royal traditions that were strictly maintained during Queen Elizabeth II’s reign. The late monarch was known for keeping a formal distance from the public, rarely displaying physical affection or engaging in close interactions.
“Royals didn’t use to embrace members of the public,” Stanton explained. “I’m not sure it’s a display of affection the late Queen would have shown.”
The shift is being widely attributed to King Charles III, who has embraced a more relaxed, personal approach since ascending the throne.
“Camilla is forging her own path, and I’m sure that’s inspired by her husband, King Charles,” Stanton noted.
King Charles has also been noticeably more tactile, frequently posing for photos with fans, shaking hands, and even hugging members of the public. His warm and approachable manner has seemingly influenced Camilla, allowing her to step away from rigid traditions and connect with people on a more personal level.
This new era of royal interaction suggests that Camilla and Charles are determined to modernise the monarchy’s public engagement style. While some royal watchers celebrate the shift, others question whether breaking royal protocol could erode the mystique of the monarchy.
Regardless of the opinions, one thing is clear—Queen Camilla is making her own mark, ushering in a new era for the British royal family.
