Revelations in Robert Hardman’s biography suggest a contrary narrative to Sussexes’ claims

A new biography by Robert Hardman, Charles III: New King, New Court, has ignited fresh controversy around Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s choice of name for their daughter, Lilibet. Contrary to the couple’s assertion that Queen Elizabeth II had been supportive of naming their daughter after her childhood nickname, the book claims the late monarch was, in fact, “furious.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex named their second child Lilibet in 2021, and at the time, they insisted they wouldn’t have used the name without the Queen’s blessing. Lawyers were involved, issuing warnings of legal action against news organizations that suggested otherwise, including the BBC.

Hardman’s biography alleges that a palace insider recalled the Queen being “as angry as I’d ever seen her” after the Sussexes claimed she had given her blessing. The book suggests that the couple attempted to involve Buckingham Palace aides in supporting their version of events but were rebuffed.

The spokesperson for Harry and Meghan had stated in 2021, “The duke spoke with his family in advance of the announcement – in fact his grandmother was the first family member he called. During that conversation, he shared their hope of naming their daughter Lilibet in her honour. Had she not been supportive, they would not have used the name.”

Hardman’s book portrays a different perspective, highlighting the discrepancy in recollections between the Sussexes and the late Queen. The threats of legal action, according to the book, eventually dissipated, and the promised libel actions against the BBC never materialized.

The revelations add a new layer to the complex relationship between the Sussexes and the royal family, raising questions about the accuracy of public statements and the behind-the-scenes dynamics within the palace. As the book continues to be serialized, it is likely to fuel further discussion and speculation regarding the intricate dynamics within the royal family.
