Qatar’s tourism soars with 24.5% increase in inbound visitors as 2030 Strategy gains momentum

Qatar tourism surge 2024: National strategy aims for over 6 million annual visitors, driven by GCC tourists and air travel

Qatar’s tourism sector is experiencing a remarkable surge in 2024, with inbound visitors increasing by 24.5% year-on-year in August, totalling 328,000 visitors. This significant milestone bolsters Qatar’s long-term vision to become a premier global tourist destination. The Qatar tourism surge in 2024 aligns with the National Tourism Sector Strategy 2030, which aims to attract over 6 million visitors annually by the end of the decade.

According to data from Qatar’s National Planning Council’s Monthly Statistics bulletin, the majority of visitors—41 per cent—came from neighbouring Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The convenience of geographical proximity and cultural ties within the region have made GCC countries a dominant source of tourism for Qatar. In addition, the report highlighted that air travel remains the most popular method for entering the country, with 64 per cent of tourists opting for this transit option, thanks to Qatar’s world-class infrastructure and its flagship airline, Qatar Airways.

Qatar’s success in the tourism sector can be partly attributed to the momentum generated by major global events, notably the FIFA World Cup 2022, which significantly boosted the nation’s international profile. Qatar welcomed over 4 million visitors in 2023, the highest in five years, capitalising on its position as a vibrant and welcoming destination for global travellers. The ongoing tourism growth is further supported by a wide range of initiatives, including streamlined visa processes, an expansive calendar of cultural events, and enhanced marketing campaigns designed to appeal to international audiences.

One of the key measures driving the surge in visitors is Qatar’s implementation of the Hayya platform earlier in 2023. This digital system simplifies the entry process for international travellers and complements the state’s liberal visa policies, allowing citizens from 95 countries to obtain visas on arrival. This streamlined approach to travel, combined with a year-round schedule of events, has made Qatar an attractive destination for tourists from diverse regions.

Saudi Arabia has emerged as the leading source of international tourists to Qatar, accounting for 25.3 per cent of all inbound visitors since the beginning of 2023. Visitors from India followed closely at 10.4 per cent, with Germany (4.1 per cent), the UK (3.9 per cent), and Kuwait (3.5 per cent) also contributing to the steady influx of tourists. These figures underscore Qatar’s appeal as a global destination, drawing tourists from both regional and international markets.

The surge in tourism coincides with broader economic growth in the country, reflecting Qatar’s commitment to diversification beyond its traditional oil and gas industries. In August 2024, the country’s broad money supply reached 731 billion Qatari riyals ($200 billion), marking a 6.7 per cent annual increase. Similarly, commercial bank deposits, which are considered cash equivalents, surged by 11.6 per cent year-on-year, totalling 1.035 trillion riyals. These figures suggest that Qatar’s economy is benefiting from increased tourism and other sectors as the country continues to diversify its sources of revenue.

In addition to economic growth, Qatar’s infrastructure continues to evolve, with the issuance of 721 new building permits in August 2024, representing an 8.3 per cent increase compared to the previous year. This growth is vital for supporting the expanding tourism sector, which requires modern hotels, resorts, entertainment venues, and transportation networks.

The tourism sector is expected to play a pivotal role in Qatar’s future economic development. The National Tourism Sector Strategy 2030 aims to position Qatar as the Middle East’s fastest-growing tourist destination. The country’s ability to draw visitors from the GCC and beyond reflects the success of its multifaceted approach to tourism promotion, encompassing both infrastructure development and visitor-friendly policies.

Qatar’s dedication to providing high-quality tourist experiences has been bolstered by a year-long calendar of cultural, sporting, and entertainment events. These include international festivals, concerts, and exhibitions, designed to engage both local and international audiences. With more visitors expected from key markets, including Saudi Arabia, India, Europe, and other parts of the Middle East, Qatar’s tourism sector is well-positioned for continued growth over the coming years.

As the country continues to build on its post-World Cup momentum, Qatar is rapidly emerging as a leading destination in the region, setting the stage for further growth as it works toward its ambitious goal of welcoming over 6 million visitors annually by 2030.
