The Prince of Wales to highlight NFL Foundation UK’s efforts in supporting youth development through flag football at a London event.

Prince William, the Prince of Wales, is set to attend a community event hosted by the NFL Foundation UK today, marking his first public appearance since his recent joint engagement with Princess Kate following her chemotherapy treatment. The event, celebrating the NFL Foundation UK’s three-year anniversary, will showcase the organisation’s work in supporting young people from deprived areas through flag football, a fast-growing non-contact version of American football.

The NFL Foundation UK is the league’s first international charitable initiative, targeting regions with low physical activity levels and high deprivation. By partnering with local organisations, the Foundation aims to empower young people, using flag football as a tool to boost their confidence, social skills, and overall development.

At the event, Prince William will meet with representatives from NFL UK and various community partners to gain insight into the programme’s impact. Through interactive sessions and direct engagement with participants, the Prince will observe how the Foundation’s unique partnerships with grassroots organisations are fostering a positive environment for young people.

Flag football, with its emphasis on teamwork and inclusivity, has been rapidly gaining popularity across the UK. Its debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games is expected to further elevate the sport’s profile, bringing even more attention to its role in youth and community development.

During the event, Prince William will participate in flag football activities alongside young athletes from across the country. His hands-on involvement will be complemented by the presence of NFL players who are currently in London for league matches, including Welsh athlete Louis Rees-Zammit, now playing for the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Phoebe Schecter, captain of the GB Women’s Flag Football Team.

The Prince and Princess of Wales have long been advocates for youth development and mental health initiatives. Last week, they carried out their first joint public engagement since Princess Kate completed her chemotherapy treatment, further solidifying their dedication to these causes. While Princess Kate will not be attending today’s event, Prince William’s presence underscores the Royal Family’s commitment to supporting charitable organisations that focus on improving the lives of young people in the UK.

The NFL Foundation UK’s anniversary event serves as an important milestone in the organisation’s journey to create meaningful and lasting change for children and teenagers in disadvantaged areas. By leveraging the power of sport, particularly through innovative partnerships like those seen in the flag football programme, the Foundation hopes to inspire the next generation to pursue their potential and lead healthier, more active lives.

The Prince of Wales’s involvement not only highlights the significance of this work but also shines a spotlight on the growing influence of American football in the UK, and the ways in which it is contributing to the social and emotional development of young people. With the support of high-profile figures like Prince William, initiatives like the NFL Foundation UK continue to gain momentum, demonstrating the transformative power of sport in communities facing adversity.
