As a young boy, Prince William wanted to become a policeman to protect Princess Diana, a royal expert reveals

Prince William once harboured a childhood dream to protect his mother, Princess Diana, revealing an early sense of responsibility for her well-being. According to royal author Andrew Morton, the young prince once declared he wanted to become a policeman to keep Diana safe—a heartbreaking sentiment given her tragic fate.

“William and Harry were aware of their destiny. One day, while discussing their futures with Diana, William said, ‘When I grow up, I want to be a policeman and look after you, Mummy,’” Morton recounted. However, his younger brother Prince Harry quickly reminded him of his royal duty, saying, ‘Oh no, you can’t, you’ve got to be king!’

The revelation adds a poignant layer to William’s childhood, as he watched his mother struggle under the relentless pressure of royal life. His protective instincts may have been shaped by Diana’s turbulent marriage, constant media scrutiny, and the fear that she was never truly safe.

In a lighthearted modern twist, Scotland Yard commissioner Jayne Richardson recently offered William’s children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, the chance to join the police force one day. William, amused, responded that George is already obsessed with police cars, toys, and everything law enforcement-related.

While the Prince of Wales was ultimately destined for the throne, his innocent wish to shield Diana from harm remains a bittersweet glimpse into the deep bond between mother and son—one that tragedy cruelly severed too soon.
