Major drug bust in northern Ireland marks one of the largest seizures by PSNI

In a significant drug bust, police in Northern Ireland intercepted a “suspicious lorry” and discovered £10 million worth of suspected cocaine hidden among frozen meat. The incident occurred during a routine patrol in Jonesborough, South Armagh, where officers pulled over the lorry and conducted a search.

The discovery, labeled as one of the largest seizures by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), resulted in the arrest of a 30-year-old man at the scene on suspicion of various driving offenses. The suspect has since been released on bail. The sophistication of the concealment method and the substantial quantity of drugs indicate the scale of criminal activity involved, according to PSNI officers.

Superintendent Norman Haslett, the Newry, Mourne & Down District Commander, commended the Slieve Gullion Neighbourhood Policing Team for their effective patrol, stating that the seized cocaine, with an estimated street value of £10 million, could have caused significant harm if distributed and sold in local communities.

Detective Chief Superintendent Andy Hill, leading the investigation from the PSNI’s Organized Crime Branch, urged the public to come forward with information about the maroon-colored Iveco Eurocargo lorry with the registration number LK08 LHO. Reviewing any dash-cam or CCTV footage of the vehicle’s travel in the South Armagh area, particularly in Jonesborough and Keady, is crucial for the ongoing investigation.

Operation Dealbreaker, the PSNI’s commitment to removing drugs from the streets, emphasizes proactive measures to investigate and disrupt drug-related activities. The authorities warn individuals against involvement in illegal drugs, affirming their dedication to identifying, arresting, and bringing offenders to justice.

The investigation is at an early stage, and law enforcement is actively pursuing leads to identify those responsible for facilitating and organizing the illicit drug importation.
