PMA issues urgent call as polio cases surge in Sindh

With 39 cases reported nationwide, including 12 in Sindh, health authorities face scrutiny over-vaccination efforts

The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has raised an alarm over a troubling increase in polio cases throughout Pakistan, particularly in Sindh province. The recent confirmation of two new polio cases—a girl in Sanghar and a boy in Mirpurkhas—has intensified concerns regarding the effectiveness of ongoing vaccination campaigns. This brings the total number of reported polio cases across the country to 39, with 12 of those occurring in Sindh alone.

Dr Abdul Ghafoor Shoro, the PMA Secretary General, voiced his grave concerns about the rise in infections. “The latest reports indicate that the situation is critical. We need to evaluate the impact of our vaccination efforts seriously,” he stated. The confirmation of these cases has placed a spotlight on the vaccination drives, which were intended to immunise children against the poliovirus effectively.

The PMA’s statement emphasised that the poliovirus has now been detected in nine districts across Sindh, with alarming reports of positive environmental samples as well. Dr Shoro called for immediate government intervention, urging health authorities to take decisive action to prevent further infections and protect the country’s children.

“Polio is not just a number; it affects the lives of innocent children. The government must act swiftly to address this crisis,” he added. The PMA stands ready to support government efforts in eradicating polio, underlining the importance of a collaborative approach.

In addition to the polio outbreak, the PMA is also focused on tackling other health threats such as dengue, malaria, and chikungunya. These diseases can be effectively managed through public awareness and preventive measures. The association highlighted the need for proper sanitation, mosquito control, and education to safeguard the health of all citizens, especially the underprivileged.

“Preventive measures can significantly reduce the incidence of these diseases. The government must prioritise the health of all its citizens, regardless of their socio-economic background,” the PMA urged.

Pakistan has long battled against polio, with numerous vaccination drives initiated to combat the virus. However, the recent spike in cases raises questions about the efficacy of these campaigns. Despite efforts to immunise children, the persistence of the virus in certain regions suggests gaps in coverage that need to be addressed urgently.

Health authorities have expressed their commitment to rectifying these shortcomings. “We are evaluating our strategies and will make necessary adjustments to ensure that every child receives the vaccination they need,” said a health official. “We cannot afford to be complacent when it comes to protecting our children.”

The PMA’s plea for action comes at a crucial juncture, with the potential for further outbreaks if swift measures are not taken. The association emphasised that the health of future generations is at stake. “We must act now to eradicate polio and prevent the resurgence of other diseases,” Dr Shoro reiterated.

Public awareness campaigns are essential in this fight against polio. The PMA urges the government to launch initiatives aimed at educating communities about the importance of vaccination. Engaging local leaders and influencers can help foster trust in vaccination efforts, which is critical in overcoming hesitancy.

Moreover, the PMA has proposed increased funding and resources for health departments to improve vaccination outreach. “Every child deserves the right to be protected from preventable diseases. We need to ensure that no child is left behind in our vaccination campaigns,” Dr Shoro concluded.

As the country grapples with these public health challenges, the collaborative efforts between the PMA, government authorities, and local communities will be crucial in eradicating polio and safeguarding the health of future generations.

In light of the escalating health crisis, the PMA’s call to action resonates louder than ever. The urgency for effective solutions to combat polio and other diseases is paramount, and the commitment to improving public health in Pakistan remains unwavering.
