The two-time Wimbledon champion steps back onto the court, driven by love for the game and a new perspective
Petra Kvitova is back—but this isn’t just another comeback story. After 17 months away from tennis, the two-time Wimbledon champion returns to competition, now balancing life as a mother and a player.
The 34-year-old Czech star will take to the court in Austin this week, facing Jodie Burrage in the ATX Open. But unlike her past battles on tour, this one is different. “I’m not coming back with expectations. I’m here because I love the sport,” Kvitova told WTA Insider.
Kvitova’s last match came in October 2023, before she stepped away to welcome her first child, Petr, with husband and coach Jiri Vanek. The time away gave her a new perspective. “You can’t imagine how it will be until you have a baby. It’s a miracle,” she reflected.
Her return wasn’t always certain. Initially, she considered retirement, but watching fellow mothers like Elina Svitolina, Naomi Osaka, and close friend Belinda Bencic make their own comebacks inspired her. “Belinda has been amazing, and seeing her success gave me hope that it’s possible.”

“I missed tennis, the hard work, the sweat,” she said. “I don’t know how long I’ll play, but I didn’t want to regret not trying.”
Kvitova’s return also brings a shift in mindset. No longer solely focused on rankings or titles, she’s embracing a more relaxed approach to competition. “I’ve already achieved my dreams in tennis,” she said. “Now, it’s about enjoying each match and seeing where this journey takes me.”
Despite her time away, Kvitova’s powerful left-handed game remains a threat on any surface. Her experience and mental toughness, honed over years of battling the sport’s best, could make her a dangerous contender—especially as she eyes another deep run at Wimbledon.
Her journey back won’t be easy, but one thing is certain—Kvitova is here for the love of the game.
