Thousands of journalists in Pakistan face unemployment and financial difficulties as the media industry struggles

The journalism sector in Pakistan is currently facing a severe downturn and crisis, with thousands of journalists losing their jobs and facing economic insecurity. A significant number of journalists have been dismissed, leading to a challenging time for both employed and unemployed media personnel.

Rana Muhammad Shahzad, a journalist with a 25-year career, now sells cotton clothes on a highway in Lahore. Despite surviving an assassination attempt and battling health issues, including cancer, Shahzad struggles to make ends meet. His story is a testament to the grim reality many journalists in Pakistan are facing.

The economic hardships have forced many journalists to seek alternative sources of income. Some have ventured into different professions, ranging from running a vegetable shop to driving rickshaws, in a bid to survive.

Despite the dire circumstances, some journalists have found success in other fields. Hasnain Chaudhary and Arshad Mehdi, for instance, have managed to balance journalism with personal businesses, finding a new source of economic stability.

The situation has sparked reactions from journalistic organizations and press clubs, which have raised their voices and protested against the layoffs and economic challenges facing the industry. These efforts have led to some journalists receiving their dues and a reduction in forced dismissals.

However, the broader issue of job security and regular salaries remains a significant concern for journalists. The economic model of the media industry is changing, and government and state institutions’ influence often exacerbates the challenges faced by journalists and media workers.
