Rising violence during PTI protests prompts extreme security measures, with curfews and ‘shoot at sight’ orders in place to quell unrest
Islamabad has descended into chaos following violent clashes between protesters and security forces, leading to the tragic martyrdom of four Rangers officials and two policemen. The escalating violence has prompted the Ministry of Interior to invoke Article 245 of the Constitution, authorising the deployment of the Pakistan Army to restore order in the capital.
The situation worsened after a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest, organised in support of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, turned deadly. Protesters clashed with security personnel at various locations across Islamabad, with heightened tensions in the city’s red zone. The PTI procession, which started at Chungi Number 26 and was heading towards D-Chowk, escalated into violent confrontations when miscreants rammed a vehicle into a group of Rangers officers, resulting in their deaths.
The violence spread quickly, with rioters also targeting police officers in Rawalpindi, throwing stones, and firing weapons at security forces. One Ranger was seriously injured in the attack and was transferred to CMH Rawalpindi in critical condition. These attacks prompted an immediate and severe response from the authorities.

The Ministry of Interior has authorised security forces to take decisive action, including using lethal force against rioters, underlining the seriousness of the government’s response. The notification also includes provisions for countering potential terrorist activities, as authorities have been given sweeping powers to restore law and order.
The military’s involvement follows a series of protests by PTI supporters calling for the release of Imran Khan, which have been marred by clashes with police and military forces in recent weeks. The use of force has now reached a critical point, with the ‘shoot at sight’ orders indicating the extreme measures being taken to curb the violence.
The situation remains tense, with authorities vowing to take all necessary steps to prevent further escalation. Miscreants involved in violent acts are being actively identified for legal action, with the government sending a clear message that any disruptive behaviour will not be tolerated.
As the army takes control of security operations in Islamabad, the city is bracing for more potential unrest. The tragic loss of life has further deepened the political divide in Pakistan, with PTI supporters continuing to call for Khan’s release, while the government seeks to clamp down on further violence.
