Fans express disappointment as Kimmel’s opening monologue targets Downey Jr.’s past drug use

The 2024 Oscars got off to a controversial start as host Jimmy Kimmel took aim at Robert Downey Jr.’s past struggles with drug addiction in his opening monologue. The Late Night star, hosting the Academy Awards for the fourth time, attempted to inject humour into the ceremony but instead left many viewers feeling uncomfortable.

Jimmy Kimmel’s joke, “This is the highest point of Robert’s long illustrious career- well, one of the highest,” accompanied by a nose gesture, was met with awkward laughter from the audience. Downey Jr., who has been sober since 2003, appeared to be a good sport initially but seemed less amused as the host continued to poke fun at his past.

The reaction on social media was swift, with many fans expressing their disappointment and calling the joke “unnecessary” and “embarrassing.” Some viewers even threatened to turn off their TVs, while others felt second-hand embarrassment for the actor.

Despite the backlash, Kimmel’s monologue did have its supporters, with some fans praising it as his best opening yet. However, the controversy overshadowed what was meant to be a night of celebration for the film industry.

The Oscars ceremony, held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, was also impacted by a protest outside the venue, which delayed the start of the show. The protest, organized by Pro-Palestine supporters, led to a dispersal order issued by the Los Angeles Police Department.

As the night progressed, the focus shifted to the awards, with Oppenheimer leading the nominations and expected to dominate the ceremony. But the lingering effect of Kimmel’s joke served as a reminder of the fine line hosts must walk between humour and sensitivity.
