From screen to survivor: Olivia Munn faces aggressive cancer with courage and support
In a heartfelt revelation that has resonated with fans and well-wishers worldwide, actress Olivia Munn has disclosed her diagnosis of breast cancer. The 43-year-old star, known for her roles in “The Newsroom” and “X-Men: Apocalypse,” shared her journey through an emotional social media post, detailing the challenges she has faced over the past ten months.
Munn’s ordeal began in February 2023 when she and her sister underwent a genetic test for 90 different cancer genes. Despite testing negative for all cancerous genes, including those for breast cancer, Munn’s relief was short-lived. By April, she was diagnosed with Luminal B cancer in both breasts, an aggressive and fast-moving form of cancer.
The actress has since undergone four surgeries, including a double mastectomy, in her battle against the disease. Munn described the whirlwind of emotions and physical toll the diagnosis and treatments have taken on her, stating, “In the past ten months, I have had four surgeries, so many days spent in bed I can’t even count and have learned more about cancer, cancer treatment, and hormones than I ever could have imagined.”
Despite the gravity of her situation, Munn revealed that she only cried twice, focusing instead on staying clear-headed and navigating through the myriad of treatments and surgeries. She expressed gratitude to her doctor, who calculated her Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Score, a decision that Munn believes saved her life.
The actress also highlighted the importance of the support she has received from her family, friends, and partner, comedian John Mulaney. Munn praised Mulaney for his research, presence, and care throughout her surgeries and recovery, noting how he ensured that photos of their son Malcolm were the first thing she saw upon waking from surgery.
Munn and Mulaney’s relationship has been in the spotlight since they were first photographed together in June 2021, following Mulaney’s split from his ex-wife, Anna Marie Tendler. The couple welcomed their son, Malcolm Hiệp, in November 2021.
As Munn continues her journey towards recovery, her story serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of life and the strength that lies in vulnerability and support. Her openness about her diagnosis and treatment sheds light on the realities of battling cancer and the resilience required to face such a formidable adversary.
