Pittwater MP Rory Amon arrested and charged with historical child sex crimes, scheduled to appear in court in September
Rory Amon, the Liberal Member of Parliament for Pittwater, has been charged with several historical child sex offences. The 35-year-old was arrested early today at Manly Police Station and is facing multiple serious charges, including five counts of sexual intercourse with a person between the ages of 10 and 14, and two counts of attempting sexual intercourse with individuals in the same age group.
In addition to these charges, Amon faces two counts of indecently assaulting a person under the age of 16 and one count of committing an act of indecency with a person under 16. The charges stem from an investigation initiated in June 2022, following reports of an alleged sexual assault that occurred in Mona Vale in July 2017.
According to police reports, the alleged assaults involved a teenage boy who was reportedly abused by someone he knew at a residence in Mona Vale. The case was investigated by Strike Force NOORAL, which led to Amon’s arrest this morning.
Amon, who entered state politics in the past year, previously served as a lawyer and held positions on the Northern Beaches Council, representing Narrabeen Ward from 2017 to 2021 and Pittwater Ward from 2021 to 2023. He is currently the shadow assistant minister for infrastructure, transport and roads, and youth.
Following his arrest, Amon was granted strict conditional bail and is scheduled to appear at Manly Local Court on September 18. This development comes amidst ongoing budget estimates hearings, during which NSW Police Minister Yasmin Catley and Commissioner Karen Webb were providing evidence. Both officials expressed surprise at the news, with Catley stating, “This is news to me,” and Webb indicating she would address questions related to the case at a later time.
The NSW opposition has canceled a planned media conference on estimates, reflecting the impact of the charges on political and public discourse.
