Netanyahu in “excellent” health, returns to duties amid ongoing Gaza conflict

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is back in action and in “excellent” health following successful hernia surgery at Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem in Jerusalem. The 74-year-old leader underwent the procedure after a routine examination revealed a hernia. Under the care of Alon Pikarsky, the hospital’s director of general surgery, Netanyahu was reported to be awake, conversing with family, and in a perfect condition shortly after surgery.

The surgery came at a critical time, with Israel engaged in a conflict with Hamas in Gaza since the October 7 attacks. In Netanyahu’s brief absence, Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Minister Yariv Levin assumed his responsibilities. Netanyahu, expressing optimism before the surgery, assured the public of his swift return to leadership duties.

This operation marks Netanyahu’s second surgical procedure since reclaiming the office of Prime Minister in late 2022, following a previous health scare that required the fitting of a pacemaker. Netanyahu’s resilience is notable, having undergone a similar hernia operation in 2013.

The surgery occurred amidst stalled negotiations between Israel and Hamas in Cairo, aiming to secure the release of remaining Israeli hostages in exchange for a ceasefire. Over 32,000 Gazans have been reported killed in the ongoing conflict. Netanyahu’s quick recovery is a crucial development for Israel as it navigates these challenging times.
