Dylan Naidoo defeats England’s Laurie Canter in a dramatic play-off after the final round is washed out
Dylan Naidoo captured his first DP Tour title in stunning fashion, edging out England’s Laurie Canter in a tense play-off to win the South African Open after torrential rain forced the final round’s cancellation.
With both players tied at 14 under par, organisers opted for a hole-by-hole showdown at Durban’s 18th. Naidoo, 27, delivered a superbly judged approach shot, setting up a four-foot birdie putt. Canter, who had been in fine form after his victory in Bahrain last month, failed to match the South African’s precision, overhitting his chip past the pin. His birdie attempt rolled wide, leaving Naidoo with the chance to seal victory.
The world number 466 admitted the pressure was immense. “I was relaxed before my chip to the green, but there were nerves ahead of the birdie putt,” he said. Holding his composure, he sank it with confidence, triggering jubilant celebrations as he secured his maiden DP Tour win.

Winning the South African Open feels like a dream,” he said, overwhelmed by the achievement.
Naidoo had been in contention throughout the tournament, sharing the lead with Canter after rounds two and three. However, relentless rain disrupted play, forcing officials to abandon Sunday’s final round entirely. That set the stage for a dramatic showdown, where the home favourite seized his opportunity to etch his name into South African golfing history.
Meanwhile, England’s Marco Penge finished one shot behind the leaders at 13 under, while South African trio Darren Fichardt, Branden Grace, and Casey Maas ended at 12 under. Italy’s Andrea Pavan and England’s Daniel Whitnell followed on 11 under.
For Naidoo, this victory represents a breakthrough moment in his career, one he hopes will propel him to greater success on the DP Tour.
