MAFS star Mel Schilling dies aged 54 after cancer, surrounded by loved ones

Mel Schilling, the relationship expert and star of Married At First Sight UK, has died at the age of 54 after a battle with cancer.

The reality television personality, who was also a mother of one, died on Tuesday. Her husband, Gareth Brisbane, confirmed the news in a statement shared on her Instagram account.

He said she passed away peacefully and was “surrounded by love” in her final moments.

In the statement, he described how, even at the end, her thoughts remained with her family. He revealed that when he believed cancer had taken away her ability to speak, she called him closer and whispered a message for him and their daughter, Maddie.

He said the effort it took for her to do so reflected her character, adding that even in her final moments, her focus was entirely on her loved ones.

Brisbane described her as a devoted mother, partner and role model. He said she had shown strength throughout her illness and had remained focused on her family despite the challenges she faced.

Schilling became widely known to audiences as the relationship coach on Married At First Sight UK. Viewers recognised her for her role guiding couples through the programme, where she became a familiar and respected figure.

Her husband noted that to the public she was known as Mel Schilling, a leading presence on the show. However, within her family, she was known affectionately as “Melsie”, a name that reflected her personal life away from the spotlight.

He also reflected on her achievements, stating that she became both a new mother and a television personality at the age of 42. According to him, she succeeded in both roles.

During the course of her illness, Schilling underwent two years of chemotherapy. Despite the physical toll it took on her, Brisbane said she never complained and continued to show courage and compassion.

He added that even when she struggled physically, she remained committed to her work and did not miss a day of filming.

Throughout her career, Schilling built a reputation as a key figure in reality television. Her role on Married At First Sight helped define her public image, and she became closely associated with the show.

Her presence on the programme contributed to its popularity, and she was widely recognised for her contributions as a relationship expert.

Brisbane’s statement emphasised not only her professional achievements but also her personal qualities. He described her as someone who consistently demonstrated empathy and strength, even during difficult times.

He said her dedication to her family remained constant, highlighting the importance she placed on her role as a mother and partner.

Schilling’s death marks the end of a life that combined public recognition with personal resilience. Her career in television brought her into the homes of many viewers, while her personal life reflected the values she shared on screen.

Her husband’s tribute underscored the impact she had on those closest to her, describing her as an “incredible mum, role model, and soulmate”.

She is survived by her husband Gareth Brisbane and their daughter Maddie.
