Legal experts weigh in as Meghan Markle’s With Love, Meghan faces plagiarism allegations
Meghan Markle is under fire after her upcoming Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, sparked accusations of plagiarism. Observers have pointed out striking similarities between Markle’s show and Cooking with Love, a project by Pamela Anderson. Now, questions are being raised about whether the Duchess of Sussex copied not just the concept but also the title.
The controversy began brewing after fans noticed parallels between the trailers for both shows. Anderson’s teaser was released in October 2024, while Markle’s came out in January 2025. The timing, along with similarities in style and branding, has led to speculation that Markle’s show may not be entirely original.
Legal experts, however, suggest that proving copyright infringement is no simple matter. Stephen Lowry, Head of Trade Marks, Copyright, and Designs at Brandsmiths Law Firm, weighed in on the debate during an interview with GB News.
“Under UK copyright laws, copyright infringement requires proof that copying has taken place,” Lowry explained. “Even if the two shows share coinciding elements, that alone doesn’t necessarily constitute infringement.” He further clarified that for a claim to hold weight, there must be evidence of direct copying rather than independent creation.
Despite this, social media has erupted with criticism. Some users believe the similarities are too obvious to ignore, while others argue that cooking and lifestyle content often overlap, making any accusations baseless.
Markle, who has not publicly addressed the allegations, is known for drawing both admiration and controversy in her post-royal career. This latest scandal adds to the long list of media storms she has faced.
As speculation mounts, the question remains—was this a case of creative inspiration or something more legally dubious?
