Putter woes for McIlroy as Åberg shines at Scottish Open

The defending champion trails the Swedish star by three shots in the second round

Rory McIlroy faced familiar challenges on the greens during the second round of the Scottish Open, as his putter struggled once again. Competing for the first time since narrowly missing out on a fifth major title at the US Open, McIlroy shot a 66 to add to his opening 65 at the Renaissance Club, placing him three shots behind fellow Ryder Cup teammate Ludvig Åberg.

McIlroy initially took control of the tournament, holding a two-shot lead with just five holes remaining. However, he faltered, recording bogeys on three of the last four holes, including a frustrating miss from just 2 feet 6 inches for par on the 16th. This misstep ultimately cost him a shot, leaving him one behind Bryson DeChambeau at Pinehurst.

In Friday’s round, McIlroy continued to experience difficulties on the greens, missing a crucial birdie opportunity from a similar distance on the 16th and failing to convert a nine-foot putt on the 17th. As a result, he now trails Åberg, who has shown impressive form throughout the tournament.

“Yeah, a misread on 16,” McIlroy reflected. “I read the putt straight. I watched it go past the hole and it didn’t look like it did much. It felt like I missed a good opportunity on the par-three 14th and another one on 17.”

Despite the setbacks, McIlroy remains optimistic about his position. “I feel like I should be around Ludvig’s score, if not a little bit better. But I’m still in a good position. I left two or three out there yesterday, and it was similar today. Hopefully, I can put it all together over the weekend.”

With competitors posting impressive scores, including a 62 and several 63s, McIlroy acknowledges the need for a strong finish to stay competitive. “It’s another weekend where I’m right in the mix of a golf tournament, and that’s a nice position to be in after the last three weeks I’ve had.”

As McIlroy heads into the weekend, the focus will be on overcoming his putting woes to make a strong push for the title.
