McDonald’s acquires Israeli franchise outlets amid regional unrest

In a strategic move, McDonald’s takes over 225 franchises in Israel, aiming to stabilize operations amid Middle East turmoil

McDonald’s has announced the acquisition of all its franchise restaurants in Israel from the local franchisee, Alonyal Limited, marking a significant shift in its business strategy in the region. This decision comes in the wake of the Israel-Hamas conflict, which has adversely affected the fast-food giant’s operations. Omri Padan, CEO and owner of Alonyal, expressed pride in having brought the McDonald’s brand to Israel for over three decades, serving the community through more than 5,000 employees across the country.

The move underscores McDonald’s commitment to the Israeli market, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a positive experience for employees and customers alike. While the financial details of the transaction remain undisclosed, this step reflects McDonald’s dedication to ensuring stability and continuity in its services amidst the challenges posed by the ongoing conflict.

McDonald’s operates over 41,000 restaurants globally, primarily through local franchise operators. This model allows franchisees considerable autonomy in setting wages, prices, and engaging in local initiatives. However, the independence of franchise operators means that McDonald’s cannot directly control each franchise’s responses to crises. 

The recent conflict has seen Alonyal offering discounts to local soldiers and security forces, a move that led to distancing by McDonald’s franchises in other regions, including Kuwait and Pakistan, highlighting the complexities of operating a global brand amidst regional tensions.

The boycotts faced by McDonald’s and other American brands in the Middle East due to the Israel-Hamas war have further complicated the business landscape. CEO Chris Kempczinski acknowledged a “meaningful business impact” in the region, emphasizing the company’s neutral stance and pride in being represented by local owners in various countries, including Muslim-majority nations.
